The partnership between the two organizations is designed to bring free, accessible web development training to those in the Kenosha community hoping to re-skill into the local tech workforce and fill open tech jobs in high demand.

Learn to code with LaunchCode

The program will consist of a free, full-time, 15-week web development training to equip learners with the skills needed by today’s employers. Job-ready graduates may have an opportunity to enter paid apprenticeships with Jockey and other local companies as an on-ramp to an upwardly mobile career. More than four out of five LaunchCode apprenticeships result in a full-time job offer, and LaunchCoders more than double their previous salary on average after securing a full-time job.

At LaunchCode, we believe the most important attributes of successful developers are passion, drive, and aptitude to succeed. You don't need to have previous coding experience to apply. We are looking for applicants from the Kenosha community who love technology, problem solving and want to create a better future through starting a tech career.

What You Need to Know

Students will need access to a PC laptop to participate in the course. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide students with laptops at this time. Mac, Chromebooks and tablets will not be sufficient for use in this course. On your PC, you must have Windows 10 OS or more recent. Please apply all system upgrades before coming to class.

Although this course is free, it is challenging and requires commitment. Outside of class, you are expected to spend 15-20 hours doing readings, watching videos, working on practice problems, and completing assignments. No previous coding experience is required for this class.

You Will Need

A PC laptop computer less than four years old (no Mac, Chromebooks or tablets) with administrator privileges and have a minimum of 4GB RAM.
Student laptops must have an i5 or i7 Intel processor; and run Windows 10 or newer
Reliable access to the internet (the public library provides free access to members)
To attend instructor-led class sessions each week
For part-time classes, 15-20 hours outside of class time each week to work on class material

Application Process

Application is open between 4/11 and 6/10. Fill in the online application right here as soon as you can!
You will receive a link to a problem solving assessment upon submitting the application. Please complete the assessment before the application closes on 6/10. This assessment is required.
Selected applicants will be invited to have a 30-minute interview with a LaunchCode team member.
You will receive your admissions decision by the end of 6/17. Please do not inquire about your application status unless you have not heard back after 6/17.
Class will start on 7/5 and end on 10/15. You will be attending the class Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm.

FAQ

Am I a good fit for the class?
This class requires no prior programming experience, but you will need to be comfortable with computer use (using the internet, downloading software, etc). Immersive CodeCamp is intended to teach skills needed to be employable as a programmer, and is for individuals who are interested in a career in tech. Applicants must be 18 or older.

We have also found that students who succeed in the class have a solid foundation in basic math and problem solving. That is why we have developed a short Problem Solving Assessment as a part of the application process.

How much time will I need to spend on the class?
Throughout the course, students should expect to spend 40 hours a week in class. While the course is designed to be completable without work outside of class, some students may find that additional work outside of the 40-hour class week may be necessary for their success.

What are the requirements to participate in this class?
Students must attend class regularly and promptly. Daily attendance is required, though occasional absences are allowed in extenuating circumstances.

If you own a PC, you must have Windows 8 OS or more recent, though Windows 10 is strongly preferred. If you own a Mac, the most recent Mac OS is strongly preferred. Laptops used for virtual courses also need to meet Zoom’s system requirements. You may CHECK ZOOM’S SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS HERE. Pay particular attention to the System Requirements and Supported Operating Systems sections. Chromebooks and tablets will not be sufficient for use in this course. If enrolled, please apply all system upgrades before coming to class.

How are applicants selected for the course?
When assessing applicants for our learning programs, a number of factors are considered, including passion, drive, application questions, essay questions, aptitude for problem solving, interest in landing a job in tech, applicant need, and spaces available in the class. As part of the process we also conduct one-on-one interviews with eligible applicants.

When enrolling students, we also strive to assemble a class that reflects the broader community and represents a diverse array of backgrounds.

Can I be admitted to the class if I don't do well on the problem solving assessment?
Yes, though it is less likely. The Problem Solving Assessment is important because it shows us how applicants approach problems that require logical thinking, which directly relates to a student’s ability to master the material presented in the class.

Can I retake the problem solving assessment?
Unfortunately, we are unable to allow applicants to retake the Assessment unless they can demonstrate that they experienced technical difficulties that prohibited them from completing it.

I will have to miss several classes throughout the course. Is that ok?
Regular class attendance is required. However, occasional absences are allowed as long as you keep up with the lessons and homework set out in the schedule. Remember, you will need to make up any class time you miss on your own time, and you won’t have the benefit of having your classmates and instructors available to answer your questions. As prior students have found, once you fall behind in class, the fast pace of the curriculum means it quickly becomes very difficult to catch up again.

Are there grades in this class? How do I pass / fail?
This class is graded on a pass/fail basis, with regular assignments and assessments. Enrollment for individual students is reassessed on a rolling basis, and students who have fallen several assignments behind in the course without making significant progress to catch up with the rest of the class may be dropped from the class. Expectations will be clearly explained to students on the first day of class.
